NYC race’s bag ban
The 32,000 cyclists in Sunday’s Five Boro Bike Tour will only be allowed to carry fanny packs and water bottles with backpacks banned in the wake o Nike Shoes f the deadly Boston Marathon bombings.
“This is the first time ever that backpacks are going to be prohibited,” said NYPD spokesman Paul Browne. “That’s at the recommendation of the organizers themselv Nike Shoes es but something that we fully endorse.”
The race will be guarded by radiation detectors, hel Nike Shoes icopters, harbor patrol, highway cops and numerous sec Nike Shoes urity cameras that will feed into lower Manhattan’s “ring of steel.”
Officers will also be out in full force on bicycles and scooters throughout the route of the race, Browne said.
“At this time of sadness and uncertainty, we want to assure riders, volunteers and spectators of the upcoming TD Five Boro Tour that we are working closely with our partners in NYC government to ensure the tour will be a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone,” said Ken Podziba, president and CEO of Bike New York, in a statement on the organizations Web site.
In addition to the heavy NYPD presence, Bike NY will have 700 of their own marshals on hand, which will be a combination of private security and volunteers.
Cops will also be paying particular attention to slow points and areas where bikers tend to get bottlenecked and crowded, as well as to the start and finish lines, Browne said.
